MIAMI (AP) — Hurricane Simon has strengthened to a Category 2 storm and was forecast to approach Mexico’s coast as a major hurricane this weekend, the National Hurricane Center said Friday.
Hurricane Isaias developed late Wednesday as the first Atlantic hurricane of 2026. Its development this late in the year tied a historical record.
Hurricane Isaias is continuing to strengthen in the Gulf, after becoming the first Atlantic hurricane of the season and is forecast to make landfall along the northern Gulf Coast later this week as a dangerous Category 2 hurricane.
Sustained winds are considered “damaging” when they reach 50 knots, or 58 m.p.h., and can start to break tree limbs and tear off roof shingles. More widespread damage occurs as winds reach and exceed hurricane force, which is 74 m.p.h.
Communities on the U.S. Gulf Coast are preparing for Hurricane Isaias, now a Category 3 hurricane, to make landfall Friday night.
Hurricane Isaias is bringing dangerous storm surge, high winds and flooding rain to Florida. See power outage map, updates for Pensacola, Escambia.
