Two of our Wildlife Keepers have driven these juveniles to Karamea (towards the top of the south island on the west coast) and from there, will helicopter to the Heaphy track. It will then be a purely natural diet for these lucky birds who will soon be living in their natural environment. The blue duck or whio is one of New Zealand’s ancient endemic waterfowl species and is 1 of only 4 of the world’s 165 waterfowl species that live permanently in rivers. The blue duck is a specialised feeder and relies on fast flowing freshwater/white water. Their diet consists almost exclusively of freshwater invertebrates.
